Mozilla Launches Web App Store ‘FireFox Marketplace’

Mozilla has just shown that they’re really taking on mobile web development technology very seriously. Just after launching the latest Aurora version of FireFox for Android a few days ago, Mozilla has immediately followed it up with the opening of the FireFox Marketplace.

The FireFox Marketplace is a browser-based store that’s similar to Google’s Web Store for Chrome, only that it is meant for mobile devices. It is a place where developers can distribute mobile web apps through Aurora. Currently, all the apps that are available in the Marketplace are free apps because Mozilla is still working on the payment system for premium apps and subscription.

The release is primarily meant for early adopters and developers as Mozilla’s engineering manager Bill Walker said in the announcement, “Our goal is to collect as much real-life feedback as possible about the Marketplace’s design, usability, performance, reliability, and content.” For developers,“FireFox Marketplace also offers APIs for app submission, payments, and app discovery. If you’d like to find out more about developing and submitting apps, you can head over to Mozilla’s developer hub and the Mozilla developer network.

FireFox Marketplace is no doubt just a part of Mozilla’s greater plan, which is coming up with its very own OS for mobile.
